Moving is a Lot of Work

Poor Planning
Create a detailed plan for your move, one that breaks out everything you need to do and include a timetable with deadlines. Make sure and assign someone to each task.
Procrastination
Why pack up your stuff today when you can put it off until tomorrow, right? Wrong! If you find yourself continually putting things off, you may be setting yourself up for an ugly moving day. Whether it is calling professional movers or purging your stuff, procrastination can lead to delays and increased costs. Do not put off items on your to-do list. Create your moving timeline and then stick to it.
Moving Too Much
Let’s face it, most people have a lot of stuff in their homes that they don’t need. And, when it’s time to pack up and move, if you just assume that everything needs to move with you, your move will cost more and take more time. Before you start packing, take some time to sort through your belongings. Don’t plan on moving items that are broken, that you won’t use and that you just don’t need. It’s also a good idea to evaluate heavy items, as they may cost more to move than they are worth, and they might be difficult to find a place for them in your new home.
Missing Packing Deadlines
The movers are coming in the morning. Your stuff isn’t even close to being packed up yet, so you rush around like a crazy person and cram stuff into whatever boxes you can find. Poor packing makes it more likely that things will break in transit. Poor labeling can make it harder to find things when you are unpacking. If you don’t get everything packed up before the professional movers arrive, you run the risk of trying to pack as the movers are loading the moving van. Or, even worse, the movers could cancel for the day and ask you to call your customer service coordinator to reschedule your moving day. Don’t delay. Start packing well in advance of your move date.
Doing too Much Yourself
There’s a point at which moving becomes too much for one person. Hiring professional movers and having the moving company pack your belongings are obvious things to do to lighten the load. But there are more ways to get help. You can ask friends to help you have a garage sale or to watch your kids or pets while you are packing. Additionally, some charities will come and pick up your donations, which can save you a trip to the drop off location. You can hire a cleaning service to take care of your old home after you move out and to also clean your new home before you move in. And finally, make sure that everyone in the family is helping with moving related tasks. Even your younger children can be assigned age-appropriate jobs.
At some point during the moving process, it’s not uncommon to ask yourself, “Why is this so much work?”. But, if you avoid the pitfalls outlined above, hopefully your move will all fall into place.
