Moving on a Budget: 5 Time and Money Savers
By Julie DeLong, A-1 Freeman Moving Group
Declutter and Sell
Getting ready for a sale while you prepare a move might seem counter-intuitive, but it could provide some much-needed relief. Decluttering before a move is much easier than doing so after. Once you have determined what you will not be bringing with you, try to sell it. Some items could have value to a specialty shop, but you could also try consignment or a garage sale. Not only have you gotten rid of stuff you no longer need, but you also can add a little more money to your moving fund. If you are selling anything in a garage sale, pick a couple of days for the sale and stick to them. Anything you don't sell can be donated anywhere you chose.
Supplies
Boxes, packing tape, markers, and stickers are among the most important aspects of your move. They don't have to be the costliest part though! Ask around for boxes and tape. If you know someone else who has recently finished moving, you might be able to pick up used boxes from them. A lot of businesses will give you the boxes from their shipments for free. If you don't have packing tape already, you'll have to buy it. You can aim for cheaper kinds but avoid the cheapest kind. You don't want the tape to fail on you. Markers and stickers can be found in most dollar stores, which can save you a bundle!
Color Coding
While adding a color-coded system to your move won't save you money, it will save you a lot of time. By organizing all your boxes and furniture by color, there is less of a chance a box will be left in the wrong room. You will need to label each room of your new space with a color as well. When it comes time, the boxes will end up on the moving truck by size and weight, not by room. By having all the boxes color coded, when the boxes are unloaded, it will be a piece of cake to know where each box goes. Leaving you with more time to settle into your new space instead of trying to find where any particular box went.
Stay Organized
By the last few days of packing it's not surprising you're tired and ready for the whole experience to be over with. You're excited about your new space but will miss the old to a certain degree. You've been surrounded by boxes for days (or even weeks) and it's easy to get complacent. If you let yourself start tossing random things in random boxes, it might make things faster at this moment, but it will take you longer to unpack later. This could mean taking more time off work which has the potential to cost you more money.
Hiring Professional Movers
While there is a cost attached to hiring a professional moving company, they will save you time and aggravation. You won't have to worry about recruiting friends to help carry the bigger items, renting a truck and gassing it back up, and you won't have to stress about how long it will take you to move all those boxes. A professional moving company will quickly, efficiently, and safely get all your belongings to your new space.
